Best uses

Best used as a ground cover or in containers. Great for shady and moist areas.

Physical characteristics

Clump-forming, fast-growing fern that grows up to 80cm tall and wide.

Flowers and foliage

Delicate deep green fronds.

Preferred site

Prefers shady sites with damp or wet soils, with lots of organic matter.

Preparation for planting

Always choose healthy, well-grown plants and plant after autumn rains. Before planting, ensure the root ball is saturated and remove the planter pot with minimal root disturbance. Trim any broken roots and plant at the same level as in the container. Dig a hole twice the diameter of the root ball, press in and water once planted. Make sure the plants are watered well until established if planting in a drier period. Plant with some general slow-release fertiliser. After this, apply organic fertiliser, such as blood and bone, at a handful per square metre, in spring as new growth appears. Plant approximately 50cm apart. Containers can be planted at any time of the year as they require frequent watering.

Maintenance tips

Apply mulch annually to discourage weed growth and help maintain moisture. This species produces baby ferns on the edges of its mature fronds. These can be picked off once large enough to handle and potted up or planted out into a shady moist site.

Requires no major maintenance except the removal of unsightly old fronds.

Pests and diseases

No pest and disease issues.
