Best uses

Best used in a mixed border, cottage-style garden or in a container.

Physical characteristics

Vigorous perennial with a rounded habit, growing up to 60cm tall.

Flowers and foliage

Bright single flowers with a golden centre. Flowers from spring to autumn.

Preferred site

Prefers full sun, well-draining soil and frost-free sites.

Preparation for planting

Always choose healthy, well-grown plants and plant after autumn rains or in spring. Before planting, ensure the root ball is saturated and remove the planter bag or pot with minimal root disturbance. Trim any broken roots and plant at the same level as in the container. Dig a hole twice the diameter of the root ball, press in and water once planted. Make sure the plants are watered until established if planting in a drier period. Planting too closely leads to spindly growth, poor flowering and eventual decline, so plant approximately 50cm apart. In a well-planned border, the plants in flower should just touch each other to create a full effect without overcrowding.

Maintenance tips

Argyranthemum cuttings do very well and are the best way to get new plants. Take cuttings about 7cm in length from new growth in late summer/autumn or during spring. These can be inserted into a pot or cutting mix or planted directly into the garden. Once rooted, pinch out the growing tips to encourage compact bushy growth. Apply mulch annually to improve soil health, moisture retention and suppress weeds. Lightly trim after each flush of flowers to keep plants compact and extend the flowering period.

Pests and diseases

Can occasionally get caterpillar damage.
