Best uses

Great for creating a subtropical or tropical feel to your garden. Combine with other palms, bromeliads and orchids.

Physical characteristics

This evergreen palm grows 5m - 10m tall and 3m wide at the crown.

Flowers and foliage

Leaf fronds are bright green and can reach a length of 60cm. Separate male and female flowers in an inflorescence are followed by large clusters of seed on thick orange stems.

Preferred site

Part shade to full shade in moist but well-drained soil suits this palm best.

Maintenance tips

Remove old fronds when they get tatty and die back. Mulch annually with an organic mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Each spring apply an organic-based fertiliser such as blood and bone at a handful per square metre as new growth begins.
