Create Taonga Puoro (Māori musical instruments)
Celebrate our Tangled Roots exhibition with this grass themed workshop!
In this workshop, you’ll create two Maori musical instruments:
1) Native timber Porotiti - porotiti is a disc, often beautifully shaped and ornamented, which can be spun on twin cords to create a mysterious humming accompaniment to singing or other music. It was also used as a Rongoa or healing tool that was able to clear breathing passages
2) Bamboo Kōauau – you will be construct and learn to play basic Kōauau made from Bamboo (a humble plant from the grass family). The kōauau is a traditional Māori mouth flute usually made from native woods with a soft inner pith that was burnt-out using hot embers alternately the block of wood could be split in two separate pieces then hollowed out and rejoined back together.
Spaces are limited and cost $20 per person so please register at: https://tinyurl.com/bddd7fkf to avoid missing out. Workshop is for adults only and limited to a maximum of 10 people.
