Tangled Roots: How Grasses Shaped Our World

Tangled Roots: How Grasses Shaped Our World

Step into a story that stretches from the ancient grasslands to the lawns beneath your feet.

Our summer exhibition Tangled Roots reveals how a single plant family — the grasses — has shaped human life more than any other, and has changed the planet itself.

Through history, ecology, art and play, discover how wheat, rice, maize, and sugar fuelled civilisations; how grasslands gave rise to horses, antelopes and early humans; and how this deep entanglement continues today in everything from cuisine to sport.

Explore living displays and interactive experiences indoors and out — meet Grassman, the living grass sculpture by UK artist Ashley Peevor, take the grass trail, wander a Miscanthus labyrinth, take the Grass Personality Quiz, and encounter remarkable species from across the world’s grasslands.

Workshops, talks, and family activities run throughout the season, from bamboo-flute making to yoga on the lawn.

Come see how grasses truly shaped our world — and how we’re still growing together.
