Awarded Conservation Practitioner Accreditation from BGCI
We are pleased to announce that we have been awarded the Conservation Practitioner Accreditation by Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI).
Auckland Botanic Gardens is active in conservation horticulture, and protecting threatened flora has been part of our mission for decades. The Threatened Native Plant Garden opened in 2001 to spotlight some of these remarkable plants and ensure every visitor can connect with the beauty and diversity of plants and habitats in Auckland and Northland.
We offer our horticultural expertise for specialty propagation, training and advocacy through apprenticeships, tours, and public programmes, as well as holding important ex-situ pant collections as seed orchards, research collections, and to connect people with plants.
We are the first in New Zealand to gain this accreditation and join 38 other gardens worldwide. This scheme recognises excellence in plant conservation policy, practice and education. We had to provide evidence that we are active in threatened plant work, sustainability, education and public outreach, and that conservation is embedded in our strategic documents and practices.
This is a great way to benchmark ourselves against botanic gardens around the world, and celebrates current and past staff and volunteers who have dedicated their time and energy to this work.
